What our customer's say!
"A great guide to playing dulcimer", About a year ago, I did a school project where I built, taught myself how to play, studied the history, and did a presentation on the Appalachian dulcimer. This book, with the CD and DVD (buy a copy new to make sure it includes both the CD and DVD) helped me learn songs. Having had experience playing guitar and piano, it came relatively natural to me.
When quickly glancing at this book, I felt that a lot of the songs were what I would call little kid songs. However, I started to notice that there were a lot of pretty good songs in that book. The DVD definitely gave a good visual on how to do things, and the CD helped show the songs. Also, I should mention that it's not just some generic book. It is entertaining, and Madeline MacNeil definitely seems like she's actually in your classroom, bedroom, TV room, living room, dining room, etc., teaching you. Well, that's what it was like for me.
This book gives a lot of tips as well as songs. Each song definitely has a purpose, and she did a great job putting the songs in order. She primarily put them from the easiest to the hardest.
The songs are definitely great songs, and Madeline MacNeil also tries to motivate you. She says that you have to learn things at your own pace. However, for me personally, because I was doing the project and had to do the presentation, I had a deadline for finishing this book. Also, there was another book that I was using, which is a great companion book. This book is The Dulcimer Book by Jean Ritchie. Jean Ritchie is probably the most well-known dulcimer player, and she was also the person that really brought it to the masses. I would suggest for you to buy this book along with The Dulcimer Book by Jean Ritchie. What I did was I went through this book, and then I went through the Jean Ritchie book.
The primary difference with the two books, is Madeline MacNeil's is much more well-rounded with styles, and the Jean Ritchie book is much more traditional.
"Excellent Book for Beginners", This is an excellent book (and DVD) for a beginner who wishes to learn DAA tuning and songs in that tuning. However, if you wish DAD tuning, or other tunings, look elsewhere. Otherwise, it's a great short course for those who are starting out using DAA tuning.
"Simple and effective", This is a well written little starter book for someone who doesn't know much about music. Nice CD as well. I liked it enough to buy another copy to send to someone else who was a beginner. She liked it as well as I did.
"The BEST musical instruction book I've ever owned!", This is a wonderful book / CD / DVD! As a complete musical idiot, I thought I would never be able to learn an instrument. I've picked up so-called beginner's books before. They usually start with the premise that you can fluently sight read musical notation. This book is truly for the beginner! The companion DVD is extremely valuable as Madeline walks you through the basics of playing the mountain dulcimer.
"Mel Bay's You Can Teach Yourself Dulcimer", This is a great book for beginners. You do not need to be able to read music to enjoy learning to play the dulcimer with this book (there is also a DVD that goes with the book so you can physically see how she is playing). It has a ton of standard tunes and takes you though a few modes. I would suggest actually learning the notes and not relying on the tablature forever, but what can I say, I am a musician and I like people to expand their musical boundaries. This book is a good start.

"Teach Yourself the Dulcimer Book", The book is good. When you tune the dulcimer you might want to get some long tones on a tape and tune it, from a piano or I used a trumpet transposed to the key of C. The book has some great songs to play and the instructions are good. I'm an adult but love my dulcimer. The book is really worth the money.
"The BEST way to begin!", I bought a beautiful dulcimer and had no idea how to play it. I went to private lessons, but wasn't happy with what I was learning. I got this book along with the companion DVD (you need the DVD if you really want to learn properly) and I couldn't have been happier. The DVD showed me how to hold and strum the dulcimer properly, and how to arrange my fingers on the frets. Once begun with this set, I have never looked back. Madeline is very clear and has the songs arranged in perfect learning order. Even though I've been playing for two years now, I still play tunes from this book. If you want to learn dulcimer and do not have a capable teacher nearby, this is THE book/DVD set you want to purchase.

"You Can Teach Yourself Dulcimer", This is the best of three books that I purchased to learn the Dulcimer. It is well written and organized. I'm in the middle of learning, but this book appears to take you from the beginning to an intermediate stage. I would strongly encourage you to purchase the CD/DVD that goes with this book. There is nothing like hearing the music in additon to reading what you should be doing.
"I'm a beginner and this is the book!", Last week, I bought a fretted dulcimer in Meadows of Dan, Virginia because it had a wormy chestnut top tooled from a local barn. It has a sweet voice and I was anxious to begin playing immediately. However, I didn't want to get started with any bad habits--so I looked over about 20 books on dulcimer playing and chose this for several reasons. 1. The author starts with simple songs and builds technique with them. For instance, there are four versions of Bile Them Cabbage Down at the beginning. The first explores single string melody, the second, single string harmony, the third and fourth have chordal fingerings. Most of the tunes in this book are in the public domain, but the arrangements are thoughtful and sound nice as well as build technique. 2. There are several tunes with tab and music for dulcimer duets. This is something I wanted to explore and glad I did. 3. The directions are very clear, plus there are insightful notes for fingering some of the measures. 4. A comapnion CD is available, which is great to listen to or play along with. 5. There are instructions for strumming and fingerpicking. It's been one week and I am already playing melody, harmony, and chords to three songs. By the time I've worked through this book, I expect to have solid technique for fingering and be able to play duets with another dulcimer player. I definitely would seek out a workshop with the author of this book! Thanks for such a great book Madeline! :) Mary Z. Cox
