"The Ultimate Reference Guide", When it comes to the saxophone, this book covers it all. Embouchure, posture, the parts of the horn, the history of the horn, reeds, fingering, you name it and it's in this book. It's surprisingly in depth on every front, even having a section on the altissimo register. This really is among the must haves of any saxophone player's library.

Having said that, this is in no way the ONLY book you should have. While it contains warm up exercises, actually buying a decent scale/chord study book should be a high priority. Also, if you're serious about learning the 3rd and 4th octaves, you need to buy a good high register book.

Ultimately, for me at least, this book comes down to more of an encyclopedia as opposed to a bible. It can take you really far, but you're eventually going to need to buckle down with specialty resources.

"The "Saxophonist's Bible"", This book is considered by many to be the "Saxophonist's Bible." A great book with many illustrations and practical advice for playing the saxophone.

"A must-have book for saxophonists", Great book!
I just started learning to play the sax, and this book has given me
an invaluable insight into the instrument and how to play it.
I recommend it to anyone starting to play the saxophone, but the information is valuable even for established and professional players.

"The Art of Saxophone Playing", I have recently started learning the basics of saxophone playing. My knowledge of playing the Saxophone, and indeed any musical instrument, and also music theory is limited. However I found that the information in "The Art of Saxophone Playing" was very informative and the way it is set out has certainly been of great help.
I think that the more advanced player will profit more from the information given in the later chapters. I'm hoping that as I improve I will better understand these chapters.

"Great book", This book is a staple among saxophonists of all veins (jazz, classical, and anything else). It is a must-have, and for good reason. It gives insight in to every aspect of being a saxophonist, including some brief but helpful information on doubling. Some chapters are very in depth, though others are less so. A great find and worth every penny.

"A Classic among saxophone methods but no "Bible".", The Art of Saxophone Playing is one of the first if not THE first scholastic book ever written on the saxophone. It is well done and well documented. Although the saxophone has been in existence for about 150 years, saxophone pedagogy is still in its baby-shoes. There is some information in Larry Teal's book that either no longer holds true, and others that ignore basic laws of physics. The book is worth having, but it should NOT be treated as the "Bible" of saxopone playing.

"You shouldnt play the sax without a mouthpiece or this book!", YOU need this book. Your teacher needs this book. Your friends, parents, coaches, band teacher, pets need this book.

It has a basic foundation for everything you need to know about the saxamaphone, its easy to read and understand (although at times gets a bit dry) but vital information.

Basically if you buy this for your saxophone student/child and they don't like it, switch them to oboe.

;)

"Without a doubt, the FIRST book for a beginner!", If you are serious about learning to play the saxophone WELL, this book is indispensible. The sax has a reputation as being easy to play, but to become a true virtuoso, nothing is further from the truth. The Art of Saxophone Playing covers, in great detail, everything you need to know and practice to become a proficient player. Body position, selection and care of reeds, choosing a mouthpiece, embouchure, tone quality, intonation, technique and every other aspect of playing are covered in depth. Mr. Teal includes exercises away from the instrument for breathing and building your embouchure. If you do them faithfully, your development will be greatly increased. He also covers selecting and buying a quality instrument, as well as doubling on other woodwinds. I can't recommend this book enough. Beginning and intermediate players will benefit tremendously. If you are going to spend the money on a horn, and put in the time to learn to play, learn to do it corectly, and this is the book to start with.

"Not For an Absolute Beginner", I not giving this book a full 5 star because despite all the rave reviews here , this book is NOT for an absolute beginner. It's a great adjunct to a beginner's book or DVD but if you're looking for a book that will show you how to play an alto sax step, by step ,by step , this book is not it.
It does however , have a lot of important information and I'm sure I'll come back to it again and again , but for now I'm going to get myself a true beginner's book.
I'm new to the sax, and this book was published in 1963. I don't know if this makes a difference , but there may or may not be new information available on the market today.
I recommend this book but only if you have a beginner's book already.

" An intermediate player's dream.", This is by far one of the best pieces of written material on this subject. This book allows those without a teacher to progress at his/her own pace and answers many of the technical questions that you ask. Any questions regarding the mechanics of saxophone playing are covered. A must have for serious beginners to progressing intermediates.
