What our customer's say!

"just a bad approach", Do you want to be able to communicate with other people about what you're doing, or be able to read and understand any other book on music? If so, this is not for you.

Fretboard Logic is misconceived and leaves guitarists in a ghetto of the author's creation. It teaches guitar playing with an idiosyncratic presentation unique to this book -- it has no shared context with other instruments, authors, or musicians.

It takes little additional effort to learn the information the book presents in the context of music theory, and the rewards of doing so are hard to overstate. Learning the rudiments of music theory greatly enhances your appreciation of music, gives you a common language for thinking about music that can be generalized to all western instruments, and most importantly gives you a much deeper sense of WHY certain notes belong together, or not.

This approach spares the guitarist a modicum of initial effort, but at the cost of depriving them a great opportunity. For a vastly superior book, I recommend Music Theory for Guitarists: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask (Guitar Method)

"Breaking through the fretboard barrier", The bottom line is: this book will do more for your playing confidence than anything else you can invest in (that is, if you don't already have expert knowledge of the fretboard). I have mainly played rhythm until now, but even my band members are amazed at my lead progress and the varieties I add the rhythm. Get it, learn it, and your confidence on the guitar will grow.

"Great book for intermediate to advanced guitarists", I am very impressed with the content of Fretboard Logic. I am a beginner so actually playing the way presented seems overwhelming right now. I can make my hands stretch to barre with a lot of effort, but it will be a while before I can do it effortlessly. That's why I'd recommend this book for intermediate to advanced, someone who can put the information into practice right away. Beginners need to start with easier stuff. That said, it is a great resource to explain the logic of the fretboard that you may not find elsewhere.

"Fretboard Logic SE", I'm finding this book more effective than any other method I've tried to learn and re-learn and practise the basics. I've been playing a few years now and this brought me back down to basics for a refresher. The instructions are conversational and they make sense. Everything is explained in detail, but no too much detail - and all the topics covered are tabbed on the same page.
I've never come across a more comprehensive way to learn or refresh oneself on the basics of playing guitar. It's a must have for any guitar player.

"Fretboard Patterns not theory. ", This is not a music theory book.
Fretboard Logic describes the Fretboard patterns that are a direct result of the guitar's unique tuning. The patterns discussed are essentially scales and chords covering the entire fretboard.
There is some occasional theory necessary to teach the subject and no more.
It may be too much for many beginners to grasp the importance of what the author is teaching but, that certainly does not mean you can't benefit by learning something new such as pentatonic scales and full bar chords (that's the first 27 pages.)
I could not play full bar chords when I bought the book. You know what you do to cure that? Practice playing them 10 minutes a day and then go onto something else.
I was thrilled when I bought HOB Blues DVD #1 and recognized the scale patterns and realized I could start APPLYING what I learned from this book. No, you will not be a better guitar player after reading this book just because you know some chords and scales. But you will have a solid foundation that will help you APPLY the information in this book as you learn music theory and it will all be a little easier.
I can't say it as a fact since I don't play with others often but, I really doubt this book would do anything but help you when playing with other guitarists and instruments regardless of their knowledge and how they learned it.
I would recommend a yellow Gripmaster (to help warm up and increase hand strength) and a metronome to go along this book.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"I thought this was a great book untill...", I read the book "blues you can use". "blues you can use" has a much more complete presentaion of the 5 standard pentatonic positions. It also has tons of exercises, and a CD with exercise played. "fretboard logic" is just text and scales..I read "fretboard logic" first and thought it was pretty good, but "blues you can use" really puts it to shame... (and no, I am in no way affiliated w/ either author).

"Great idea, novel insights, not for everyone", If you're stuggling to piece together advanced chord forms and lead positions, this book may help you reach that "a-ha!" moment when things fall into place. It's not for everyone. It's entirely theoretical (no applications/exercises), dense, and bone-dry. Kinda like a calculus book for those studying music theory on guitar. And it really needs a copy editor. But the insights have helped me a bit.

"a great resource, to be used with others ", I wish I'd had this book when I started "playing" 30 years ago, but I'm glad I found it when I did about 5 yrs ago. Using it at least tripled my understanding and ability in less than a month, and I'm still working with the book. As one of the other reviewers said, you have to apply the information and practice - why would it be different from any other skill - algebra, golf, writing, etc. ? I also study instructional dvds by, e.g., Ernie Hawkins, Kenny Sultan, James Burton, Danny Gatton. They all complement each other. One thing about the traditional way of learning is that you don't learn barre chords or different positions or inversions, and it gets boring playing House of the Rising Sun on the first three frets over and over.

"There is no shortcuts in music!", I started playing guitar in the 70's when there was no internet etc. Wanna play guitar? Buy a songbook with chord diagrams and learn simple basic music theory.
I bought this book along with Guitar fretboard workbook because I was still looking for the "magic bullet" to break down this mental block I have on lead guitar. Well! What a waste of money! If you think you were confused before wait till you try this system!
Don't believe the reviews. I would like to see or hear these so called people who rave about this book.
You can't cheat the system, and you won't find no smoking gun or magic bullet in this book. Basic music theory is the answer!

"Fantastic book!", This book is all about the CAGED system. At first there was some skepticism about the whole theory of the Caged System, you know--I figured it would be better to learn the fretboard in a more natural way--by notes and by memory, not by patterns. However, as I went deeper into my studies and deeper into this book, it made me realize how ESSENTIAL patterns are to learning guitar. Everything in life comes in patterns, and the CAGED system is one of the most important and simple patterns to memories. I find this book astonishing and intelligent--a great read!
