What our customer's say!

"Great bang for the buck interface", I've been using this for almost 4 years now with no issues whatsoever. The only real problem I've ever had with it was fairly late vista and 64 bit support but I was lucky enough to have been a participant for their 64 bit driver beta testing and with vista 64, it performed flawlessly.

If your computer has at least 2 gigs of ram (which it should if you're recording) and a core 2 duo cpu or something like that you shouldn't have any latency issues. I recorded with an old Pentium 4 and 2 gigs of ram and never had any latency issues.

I mainly use it for recording a pair of mic's on a guitar cab. The preamps are decent but I prefer using my ART digital MPA until I can upgrade later on.

M-Audio has full XP/Vista 32 bit and 64 bit driver support now as well as a forum where their techs and developers actually DO frequent so tech support shouldn't be a problem.

"Great for DJing, okay for recording.", I find the gain has to be high on all the mics I put into this thing. Electric guitar straight in works great. Would be great as a dual out for DJing, but with microphone recording (used SM57 and MKH416)you've gotta be really loud or the gain has to be up too high and adds noise. Basically there's a tiny range where the pots seem to go WAY up. it's tough to get that at just the right point, it's kinda like all or nothing. It works for mic recording, but if you're really serious I'd go with something better. But again, for DJing or recording direct from electric guitars it's great.

"silent nights....", grab the latest drivers online, load, plug, and play.
solid, small workhorse thats simple to use. I go in and out of my mixer with it, turn the channel to 10 with no hiss !
It works great with Sonar and Sound Forge. Amazon's price was the lowest.

"Hands down the worst device for recording", At first glance I thought this was the perfect solution for my Mac Pro -- a nice little USB recording interface with SPDIF in/out and simple interface. I was completely wrong.

The drivers for this device are the worst I have ever had the displeasure to install. Under OS X 10.5.4 the SPDIF in simply does not work AT ALL. No config options are available to any software program or even at the OS level. M-Audio forums are flooded with issues and the device simply doesn't work as advertised.

M-Audio, shame on you for releasing such a crappy product and ignoring your users.

"Not worth the trouble", Very disappointed with this one. I own the Firewire Solo, but needed something as a DJ interface with the ability to cue songs. Downloaded the latest driver from their site to go along with my Intel Mac (Leopard) and experienced all sorts of issues. Scrapped that driver and decided to go with the one in the box which didn't even read the preamp correctly and set it up as a 0 in/2 out. Scrapped that driver and downloaded the driver that was one version earlier than the latest, just to see. More problems. If you're not going to build something that actually works, just don't put it out until you've got it fixed. This will make it hard for me to trust M-Audio with anything else for the future.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Don't let the naysayers scare you off..", This is a great little machine, yes there are a few caveats.. but on the whole I don't think you will find anything else in this price range with better features. I noticed quite a few negative reviews on this and other m-audio devices here on amazon, but it appears that most of them are either people who are inexperienced with digital audio equipment or people complaining about driver issues.

I have owned previous M-audio equipment and they do have a history of spotty drivers and slow fixes, however in this case I have had absolutely no problems with their drivers (running on Vista 32-bit). The sound quality is great, ASIO latency is low (~3ms), works on Linux too. I would give it 5 stars if it was 24/96 and usb 2.0

"Just Plug and Play - Works Great!!", I've had this for over a week and have been recording many hours every night. No problems so far.

I am using Garageband on a MacBook Pro laptop and the addition of this device was seamless.

I am not new to home recording as I have a Dell Pc with an Edirol USB device and Sonar Producer edition but I moved and these are still at my old home.

One of the main reasons I bought this was for the Mac/Pc compatibility and the phantom power - a requirement for my Condenser mic.

It feels well constructed and the preamps work well - the pad switches being a nice addition.

The ability for recording two tracks at a time is great too as sometimes I like to lay down a "live" demo first and its great to have guitar on one track and vocals on another.

The Cons?
Well, this is me being picky but I dont like the white push switches, they just feel and little cheap and plastic.
Also the gains could have been better, you do need to have them almost all the way up.

Other than that, I cant fault it. But there are many more hours of recording ahead of me so if anything pops up, I'll be back!

"Get an Mbox mini...", The fast track pro set up easily, but performed horribly with Adobe Audition 2.0, on an XP professional SP2 system that greatly exceeded m-audio's requirements. I took a lot of time to tweak buffer and CPU settings, but the interface generated clicks and pops during recording and playback (which did not wind up on tape) and occasionally dropped out completely during recording, only to fade back in slowly in a few seconds (this did affect the recording). My searches for support through m-audio forums or online literature came up empty. The package included the barest of setup guides, and no type of manual or user's guide. I did not call tech support, because it was a weekend.

The connections felt a little bit loose and flimsy. The headphone amp was noisy.

It comes with Ableton's Live Lite and Pro Tools M-powered. I never got to use the Pro Tools because it would not recognize the Fast Track Pro, even after a proper installation (when Pro Tools does not detect compliant hardware, it simply closes).

I returned the interface and bought an M-Box mini for $100 more. It sounds perfect and performs very well, and comes with Pro Tools LE 7, which is a great program. The Mini has one XLR input, no MIDI input, and no S/PDIF docks, so it is less fully featured than the Fast Track Pro, but sounds much better, and, you know, actually works.

"it's not for pros", I used this mainly in a recording studio.

i had this thing since it was first released around dec 05. the drivers on the cd wouldn't install and seemed alpha quality. since then, new drivers released 3 months later, and none since then. first, BEWARE, if your FTP is on WindowsXP, and is plugged into a USB port that doesn't share IRQs well, you'll have a lot of bluescreen, or audio will stop working, etc... it wont be solid. this was confirmed by talking with m-audio tech support. also searching the net it appears the USB IRQ thing in Windows is a well known problem. and we all thought USB was plug and play? i was floored.. so... after i fixed this conflict (I plugged the USB into a different USB jack who's IRQ wasn't shared by any others), no more crashing/hanging, but occasionally the audio would quit working in windows and i'd have to reboot, maybe every 3-7 days. recently cleaned off some trojan/virus/malware on the system, and the audio _seemed_ to become solid for the last couple weeks straight (so maybe it was just malware causing the issue, or maybe that 3-7 day estimate really is 3-14... hmmm)... anyway, i've uninstalled the device already as I got tired of it as you can imagine.

that said, assuming you will get this device solidly working (and many people have told me they have, so maybe it's ok), here's what's _not_ cool about this little device: can't change buffer size while in audio application (need to quit audio app, then change buffer size, then reenter the app)... also, it's USB1.1, so enabling full duplex (both input and output at the same time) you get a lesser quality sampling rate. the audio ins and outs clip a little low, apparently not as much headroom as other pro gear. With all the screwing around with USB, the fact that it is still using USB 1.1 (instead of 2.0) when introduced in 2006, and the low quality ins/outs, calling this unit "PRO" is going a little far. it certainly appears nice from looking at the I/O features, which is probably what hooks people (it's why I bought it, it's like a swiss army knife). drivers are not often updated, when there's clearly work to be done (i.e. changing the buffer size without closing down the audio app, handling USB IRQ conflicts without being a CPU hog or hanging the computer "a USB driver should not crash a computer no matter how much the tech support person says it needs to be very lean to run realtime... :)", etc..)

what's cool about this, lots of IO features: 2 mic inputs, nice front panel, headphone, etc... really it's the best external audio unit for the price when comparing features...

if you're really a pro, maybe you'd rather go with an internal PCI solution that's more of a sure thing than fiddling with the USB problems and low headroom on the IOs. I got rid of mine in favor of an echo mia midi which is really cool compared to this...

if you need all the IO features (mixer, headphone, mic inputs), and you really really need it external, then the fasttrack pro may be worth trying out, it's a nice little unit when it works, and i hear it works solidly for many people (just 0.01% of the time for me though, so I'm a little spooked, so it's bye bye)...

"M-Audio Fast Track Pro", Outstanding product for anyone interested in reproducing digital music using computer as the sound source. I use it for DJing where the unit functions as an external sound card enabling my DJ software (PCDJ Red)to act as two individual decks connected separatley to my exteranl mixer! If you've ever used software for DJing you know the power of having practically unlimited songs at your fingertips. You can even have the same song in both decks! And requests are found in and instant for the listening audinece. I highly recommend this product and the best deal I found was thru [...]... hands down!
