"Brass beauty", I had wanted a bass trombone ever since I first encountered their marvelous sound at a jazz band concert. I was going into my senior year of high school and needed a boost from my King beginner trombone to match my growing tone and abilities. After a long research process I was recommended a Conn 62H by a professional bass trombone player in my area. He also recommended that I try an independent rotor for more versatility.



I have not looked back since.



After some wheeling and dealing with my local music store I got one specialty ordered Conn 62HI for about $3,000. It came with three interchangeable lead pipes, a rose brass bell, a special bass trombone mouth piece (because the bore is HUGE), rotor oil, slide cream, and the most beautiful case I'd ever laid eyes on.



Initially, I found the weight of the instrument a little off putting (I am a girl and lacked upper body strength before I got this trombone). However I noted that the instrument, though noticeably heavier, was much more balanced than my beginner trombone. That might be due to the mass of tubing used in the rotors but it works out great for me. One thing is for sure, you get biceps playing this baby.



I also had some slight trouble adjusting to the larger bore size since I was coming straight off a student trombone. I will admit that I could only play sitting down at first because I wasn't used to the amount of air required to play a big trombone like this. Tuba players ought to do just fine but a beginner trombonist like me will need flat out practice with the instrument before they get the right air support. Half a year later I still find myself getting a little dizzy after LONG runs of notes, but I'm mostly able to handle it fine. On a related note, my tone (which is usually pretty good) took a dive at first and sounded off. However, after practicing it went back up and easily exceeded what I had done with my student instrument. I noticed that in addition to improving my range downwards (hello pedal tones) it also made my high notes sound more full and they came much easier.



If you come straight off a beginner trombone like me, you will find that the valves can be rather confusing. After half a year of practice I still have trouble hitting the right ones at the right time. Definitely line up a BASS TROMBONE teacher BEFORE you get this instrument or it can be all for nothing. Music books are great, but that little extra wisdom a teacher can give makes learning much easier.



Overall, I would say it is a great buy for anyone who wants to amp up their performance and open their range to all a real trombone can offer. The quality that Conn is known for really shows in this instrument. I found that music instructors and band teachers alike couldn't help but want to examine it because it was so gorgeous. Be careful with the bell because it seems to dent easily.

I recommend that you check pricing in your local instrument retailers first simply because most will never make you pay list price. I actually found a better deal locally then online. Also, stores can help you break in the instrument which definitely helps.

My biggest suggestion is that you find professional trombone players and ask for their opinions. They know their stuff and they won't steer you wrong.
