What our customer's say!
"Not a bad instrument: previous reviews...what?", Let's get this out of the way: this clarinet isn't anywhere near professional quality. That's a given. You can't expect to pay under a Benjamin and get a super-high-quality instrument. You can, however, get an instrument that is smack-dab in the middle of the student quality road. The "German Silver" coated keys don't tarnish, the plastic has a nice matte, grendalla-esque finish, and the instrument comes tuned within +/- 20hz to each note, according to my fancy-dancy computer tuner/condenser mic combo. Not a bad combination for the price.
There are only THREE faults I can see from my month of playing with it:
- Some keys come EXTREMELY tight. I know A# is supposed to be difficult to press, but not THIS difficult. A jewelers screwdriver (or a quick trip to your friendly neighborhood music shop) quickly fixes this problem
- The mouthpiece. Throw the one it comes with away, and get a real one. It isn't even ebonite, just some generic ABS plastic dealie. Of course, intermediate + clarinets don't even come with one, so this is almost to be expected. Not a deal breaker by any means.
- The case. It does it's job, and I guess that's all it was designed to do, but I don't really trust the instrument in there for long, considering the target market. Beginner students will destroy anything, and this case is no exception. If care is taken, though, I suppose it will suffice.
Overall, the instrument sounds quite nice, and will be a good start for any student or beginner player. I use it for practice, or for when I don't really want to take my nice Yamaha out to travel. Buy it as a starter, and then keep it as a backup/practice instrument for later times. You can't argue with this price.
"Great Beginners Clarinet", I started clarinet lessons about a year ago and was looking for a good priced clarinet. I found this one, and with some convincing, I was able to get it. I got this about a year ago, and have a couple small (repairable) complaints. First of all, the ligature is plastic (I'd prefer metal, holds up longer). My swabi ripped in two pieces because it got stuck, and one of the keys got stuck when I pushed down (my mom put WD40 on it and it played like it should). I read two other reviews on this product and I think they were too harsh. All you really need in a clarinet is for it to play like it should and the keys shouldn't constaintly get stuck. I have done wear and tear on this clarinet and it still looks and plays like new. I got my music teacher to give me some suggestions on the problems, and got them fixed right away. A total beginner's clarinet.
"Research before buying", I Bought this instrument for my daughter, I figured it was a good price and looked decent enough, she has not had it even 6 months and it no longer hits high notes, now she can't continue in band without buying a new instrument because none of the music stores can fix it. Just research this instrument before buying and call the music stores around you in case you do get into a predicament where you need it fixed and tell thm the brand and if they can service it if needed.
"You get what you pay for...", I've been playing saxophone for 10 years and clarinet for just 2 weeks, so I figured something cheap would do. Lo and behold, this clarinet is pretty cheap (don't let the original price fool you). Some of the metal was bent on arrival and some of the keys don't pop back up when you release them, which I had to fix with a screwdriver and some super-glue. My friend who's been playing clarinet for awhile says that some notes have almost no resistance that should, and vice-versa. Also, like any woodwind instrument, the mouthpiece that comes with it is a joke piece of plastic. But for someone who's never played clarinet and just wants to give it a spin, it's about the cheapest new one you'll find.
